Age a Minor should Begin to wear Tzitzit

Chapter Fifteen Page 42 Al HaShulchan

5. Once a minor knows how to put on a tallit, his father must buy him zizit in order to educate him in this Mitzva.  The authorities differ as to the age when this applies; some hold that at nine years old, others say for an intelligent child from six years old and one not so bright at nine years old, and a third opinion is that once he reaches the age of three there is already an obligation to educate him as the Torah indicates (in Leviticus 19) 'for three years they shall be restricted to you...and in the fourth year, etc.' This minor should say the blessing over zizit in the same way as an adult, and when he reaches the age of thirteen years he has the same obligation concerning zizit as an adult (K.Hach 17:10) and he should not wait until marriage to fulfill this Mitzva. (Mishna Berura 17:10)

As quoted from:
Shulchan HaMelech, a Kitzur Shulchan Aruch in 3 volumes as compiled by Maharan HaRav Shmuel Laniado z'al, 1923 with the supplement "Al HaShulchan" containing various opinions compiled by Ezra Basri, Chief Justice of the District Court, Jerusalem in 1992.

We would like to dedicate this learning for the speedy and complete recovery of several people, including Gittel bas Yehudis, Mendel ben Florence, our friends' 5-year-old son, Joseph Benjamin, son of Ireneusz Khrystof, diagnosed in April with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and a longtime friend of the family, Franco, son of Joseph, who is B"H recovering from thyroid surgery. Please have them in mind when studying. For updates on Joey please go to his site,
